White Arbor Quilting & Design

Quilting Services

I offer a range of quilting services to meet your needs.  Every quilt project starts with a design consultation so we can find a design that meets your quilt’s needs and your budget.  To determine the best quilting style, we will consider how your quilt will be used and cared for in the future.  Will it be a well loved and often washed treasure or a show piece for display?  All quilting services are priced per square inch.  To find the square inches of your quilt, multiply length by width then multiply that number by the decimal value of the price per inch.  For example 85” x 100” = 8500 square inches.  8500 x .02 (2 cents per square inch) = $170.

Basic Freehand Quilting

This is a loose utility quilting, priced at 2 cents per square inch (.02).  Loose stippling, loops, and large scale organic shapes with edge to edge quilting typify this style.  Lines of stitching will be between 2” and 5” apart with the quilting moving across the quilt without regard to piecing style.  There is a $50 minimum quilting fee.

Pantograph Quilting

This is the most popular quilting service, ideal for quilts designed for regular use.  A pantograph is a paper pattern that is placed on the longarm machine table and is then transferred to the quilt by tracing the pattern using a laser pointer as a guide.  This is a completely hand-guided process that results in beautiful and often complex designs with regular repeating motifs edge to edge across the quilt without regard to the piecing.  The themes of individual patterns range widely, but in general stitching will be ¾” to 1 ½” apart and is available for 2 cents per square inch (.02) in most cases.  Select designs with greater density and complexity may be up to 3 cents per square inch (.03).  I am always adding to my pattern collection and am willing to special order a design if you have a particular theme in mind.  There is a $50 minimum quilting fee.

Custom Quilting

Custom quilting varies greatly by design and price quotes are much more effective during a personal consultation.  In general, custom quilting highlights individual blocks and borders, treating each element separately.

Basic Custom Quilting

Basic custom quilting is the most popular custom treatment.  Prices range from 3 cents per square inch (.03) to 4 cents per square inch (.04).  This style of quilting includes complex freehand edge to edge designs such as meandering feathers, simple block and border treatments, or the center area of a quilt being filled with freehand or pantograph designs with separate border treatments.  Generally, there is no or very little stitch in the ditch quilting.  Designs are usually larger in scale, but uniform in density throughout the quilt.  There is a $50 minimum quilting fee.

Medium Custom Quilting

Medium custom quilting design possibilities are extensive, but can include moderate stitch in the ditch, continuous curve designs, more detailed block and border treatments, freehand feather designs, and ruler work.  These elements are used in combination to create a uniform medium density of quilting that works harmoniously with your piecing design.  This level of quilting ranges from 4 cents per square inch (.04) to 5 cents per square inch (.05).  There is a $75 minimum quilting fee.

Full Custom Quilting

Full custom quilting can utilize all of the same elements of medium custom quilting in greater density, or with the addition of extensive stitch in the ditch, elaborate cross hatching, dense background fills, and complex secondary design elements.  With prices staring at 6 cents per square inch (.06) and ranging upwards, this level of quilting represents a significant investment.  These quilts are usually used for display only or as family heirlooms.  There is a $100 minimum quilting fee.

Additional Services and Fees

Thread

A single solid color thread is included with the quilting fee.  There are no bobbin charges.  Additional solid color threads are $5.00 each.  Variegated thread is available for $15.00.

Batting

The choice of batting is up to you and you are welcome to provide your own batting.  However, I will not accept Mountain Mist brand batting, as I find that it performs very poorly on my longarm quilting machine.

Each batting has its own characteristics of loft, shrinkage and migration, so please ask if you have questions about your project.  I would like to recommend wool batting to customers interested in full custom quilting.  The loft of wool batting allows the elaborate designs to show beautifully.  Modern wool batting is washable and extremely light weight, perfect for winter warmth and summer breathability.  Wool is available by special order or at several of our local shops.  I currently offer both cotton and polyester batting on the roll for your convenience which you can purchase by the linear inch.  I prefer rolled batting because it does not have any packaging creases.  You will need batting that is a minimum of 8” longer and wider that your quilt top.

I have the following batting available:

Hobb's 80/20 Bleached 108” wide for 25 cents per linear inch

This batting is ideal for a traditional looking quilt. Once washed, there is some shrinkage, creating that antique puckered look.  It has a nice drape and can be stitched up to 8” apart.

Hobb's 80/20 Natural 93” wide for 25 cents per linear inch

This batting is ideal for a traditional looking quilt. Once washed, there is some shrinkage, creating that antique puckered look.  It has a nice drape and can be stitched up to 8” apart.

Quilter’s Dream Poly Select 93” wide for 20 cents per linear inch / King package also available for $28

This pure white batting is silky and soft with no resins, glues, or binders.  There is minimal to no shrinkage.  Quilts quilted with this batting will be lighter in weight to those in cotton, but just as warm.

Quilter’s Dream Poly Select Black Twin / Queen / King sizes for $19 / $26 / $33

This solid black batting is silky and soft with no resins, glues, or binders.  There is minimal to no shrinkage.  Quilts quilted with this batting will be lighter in weight to those in cotton, but just as warm.

Quilter’s Dream Angel Crib size for $12 (45" x 60")

A special blend of flame-retardant fibers provides a soft, warm batt with excellent draping and no chemical additives.  Recommended for infant bedding.

Binding Service

I offer binding services at $35.00 per hour.  I will use your fabric to create double fold binding and apply it to the top of your quilt with mitered corners and a French finishing seam.  I do not provide the final hand finishing for your binding.  This requires the binding to be rolled to the back and hand stitched with a simple whip stitch.  I will provide instructions for you to do this last step if you would like.

Ironing and Trimming

Please have your quilt ready for drop off by loosely folding it over a hanger after it has been ironed and loose threads have been trimmed off the front and back.  Loose back threads can shadow through to the front of light fabrics.  There is a $5.00 ironing fee and a $5.00 trimming fee for excessive wrinkles and loose threads.

Hourly Seamstress Fees

There is a $35.00 per hour seamstress fee for special construction needs such as removing and reattaching borders, attaching hanging sleeves, and other miscellaneous sewing services.  The customer will be contacted if this fee becomes necessary before quilting begins.

Tax

There is a 6% Pennsylvania State sales tax on quilting and seamstress services.
